IC > New Appearance and Dress Code

The purpose of the dress code is to encourage students to focus on the learning process without the distraction of unsuitable dress and grooming. The administration recognizes the individuality that students exercise in their clothing choices. In making these choices, dress should reflect current good taste and a style appropriate for a school day. Personal cleanliness is an essential part of projecting a good appearance. Student dress and appearance should reflect sensitivity to and respect for others. Sexually suggestive clothing should not be worn. Clothing should not create a threat to the safety or health of any student. Appropriateness will be determined by the school administrators. Among the clothing guidelines are (Please note that the guidelines are not limited to those below):

  1. Undergarments should not be visible.
  2. Any item of clothing that has a rip or hole above the knee that exposes the skin is not permitted.
  3. Clothing or jewelry which may damage furniture or be used as a weapon may not be worn.
  4. Wearing of large chains from the neck, body, or clothing is not permitted.
  5. Clothing that promotes drugs, alcohol, smoking, violence, or sex may not be worn.
  6. Apparel must cover the midriff area and back. Spaghetti straps alone cannot be worn. Tube tops are not permitted. Girls' tank top straps must be a width of three (3) fingers at minimum. Boys' shirts must have sleeves.
  7. Low-cut tops are not permitted.
  8. Shorts / Skorts must have an inseam of at least three (3) inches. Skirts must be no shorter than mid-thigh in length.
  9. Pants that are so long as to cover shoes and be walked on are not permitted.
  10. Footwear must be worn at all times.
  11. Hats, scarves, sunglasses, and other types of head coverings are not allowed. Scarves, head coverings or other clothes of bandana design are not permitted.
  12. Outerwear may not be worn in class.

First Offense:

  • Student sent to the office.
  • Student must resolve the situation:
    • Put something different on.
    • Wear their gym uniform.
    • Call a parent to bring new clothes.
    • Spend the day in ISS with parent phone call prior to sending to ISS.
  • Parent contact via letter mailed home.
  • Violation is logged by the administrator.

Second Offense:

  • Student sent to the office.
  • Student must resolve the situation:
    • Put something different on.
    • Wear their gym uniform.
    • Call a parent to bring new clothes.
    • Spend the day in ISS with parent phone call prior to sending to ISS.
  • Office Detention assigned.
  • The Administrator will make a parent phone call.
  • Violation is logged by the administrator.

Third and Subsequent Offenses (Also, see the SASD Disciplinary Structure for repeat Level I offenses.):

  • Student sent to the office.
  • Student must resolve the situation:
    • Put something different on.
    • Wear their gym uniform.
    • Call a parent to bring new clothes
  • Student is assigned In-School-Suspension with parent contact.
  • Violation is logged by the administrator.
